Having worked as sub editor at SurfGirl mag for years, the derring-do stories of the female surfers out there never fail to amaze me. As a very average surfer, I just can’t fathom how you muster the courage to take off on the sort of waves that Devon’s Laura Crane has been tackling at Nazaré, master any of the manoeuvres that the next gen of girl surfers are displaying, or even pull into a hollow barrel and get spat out while still on your feet.
However, as a surfer who loves to travel, in this issue of SurfGirl – amidst stories of the sport’s wonder women – I’ve included my bucket-list destinations for adventurous surfers. From the Azores to the Philippines, these are sort of places for a surf trip of a lifetime – where you need a few words of the local lingo and can’t rely on 5G, and you don’t just rock up and get everything spoon-fed at a surf camp.
